Cardinals extend Matt Carpenter with six-year deal

While most teams are getting back into the swing of things in Spring Training, some teams are ensuring some of their stars will stick around a little longer. One example is Matt Carpenter, who inked a six-year extension with the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday. The deal was announced at a press conference, and is said to be worth $52 million.

Carpenter, who will be 28 this season, is coming off a spectacular season that was highlighted with a .318 batting average and finishing fourth in NL MVP voting. Here is how his new deal will break down:

  • 2014 - $1 million, with $1.5 million signing bonus
  • 2015 - $3.5 million
  • 2016 - $6.25 million
  • 2017 - $9.75 million
  • 2018 - $13.5 million
  • 2019 - $14.5 million

For the 2020 season, St. Louis will have an $18.5 million option on Carpenter with a $2 million buyout. Earlier this week, news broke that the two sides were close to a deal that would potentially range between $50 and $55 million. When asked about the signing, he was elated to be a part of the Cards' long-term plan.

This is the first time in my professional career where I get a chance to live up to an expectation, where as I always felt like I was the guy who had to write his own script. No one really expected anything of me, and I had to prove something. Now there is an expectation there, and I'm excited for the chance to meet those expectations. Not just meet them, but exceed them. I want that. I welcome that pressure. That's exciting for me.

After making his presence felt at second base, Carpenter gets a new opportunity this year. St. Louis sent David Freese to the Angels earlier this offseason, opening up a spot at third base for him to to move over. This also makes room for Kolten Wong to move in at second.
