The new Pope who chose the name Francis in honor of 13th century saint, was born a child of an Italian railway worker who immigrated to Argentina. Like Saint Francis, Pope Francis has become known for his humility and for being for social justice. It is a big honor for Latin Americans to have a Pope from Argentina.
This historical moment marks the first Pope from the New World, Argentina (a non-European country). This comes 13 days after Pope Benedict XVI ended Papacy on February 28, 2013.
