The Cardinals have officially added Sunday's starter to the 25-man roster, as Jaime Garcia has been activate from the 15-day DL to start against the Atlanta Braves. Jorge Rondon has been optioned to Triple A Memphis to clear a roster spot for Garcia.
The start versus the Braves will be Garcia's 2014 debut; the lefty has been out since last May due to a rotator cuff and torn labrum that required surgery. Garcia was expected to be ready to start the season with the team in spring training, but the injury took longer to heal than the team and pitcher hoped.
Garcia pitched a rehab assignment for both Springfield (Double A) and Memphis over the last 2 weeks, for a total of seven innings. Today's start will probably have a pitch limit and the bullpen might be ready for an extended outing.
The Cardinals also noted that this would be Garcia's 100th career game in the majors (91st start).
