The Cardinals are facing the Twins today and will be employing a DH; here is the lineup courtesy of Jenifer Langosch:

  • 3B Matt Carpenter
  • 2B Kolten Wong
  • DH Matt Holliday
  • RF Allen Craig
  • C Yadier Molina
  • SS Jhonny Peralta
  • 1B Matt Adams
  • CF Peter Bourjos
  • LF Stephen Piscotty
  • SP Carlos Martinez

Martinez is hoping that he can seal up the 5th starter role with this start; he should have 1 more before the season starts. Pat Neshek is also scheduled to pitch today; no word on other relievers yet.

The Cardinals announced yesterday via press release that they are changing medical staffs. Dr. George Paletta, who has been the medical director since 1998, is being replaced by Mercy Sports Medicine. This is huge news since there have been a lot of questionable medical issues with Cardinal players. Chris Carpenter, Scott Rolen, Jaime Garcia and many other players have been instructed to rehab injuries that ended up needing surgery; some have even publicly complained about the process. There have even been a few players that got second opinions on injuries from medical personnel not associated with the Cardinals.

Speaking of Garcia, Joe Strauss is reporting that Garcia has not pitched at 100% for as long as he could remember. "It's always been my elbow," Garcia said. "It's part of my career. The 2010 season is probably the best I've ever felt." 2010 was the first season he pitched after Tommy John surgery; the shoulder issue, which prompted surgery in 2013, probably stem from altering his mechanics due to the elbow issues. Garcia is expected to start the season on the disabled listed, with the hopes of being ready in May; June may be a more realistic goal though. The Cardinals have depth to let Garcia take his time; Joe Kelly and Carlos Martinez are battling for his rotation spot while he recovers.

The voting for the Favorite Living Cardinal Tournament has started: the Champions Region , the Arch Region, the Ballpark Village Region and the Diamond Region. These are all voting for half of each region; the voting closes today at noon CST.

Bill Ivie scores the top prospects in Cardinal camp; “A” for Wong and Martinez, “B” for Piscotty, “F” for Taveras, and “Incomplete” for Gonzales. If Gonzales has an incomplete, so should Taveras; while his issue was more mental, his injury was still responsible for the limited playing time. Truthfully, the way this played out is probably for the best; he needs to get constant at bats rather than sitting on the bench waiting for an at bat here or there.
