The Catholic Church has a history of protecting pedophiles within their ranks. Cardinal Wilfrid Fox Napier, Archbishop of Durbin, speaking Saturday on BBC Radio, made statements defending pedophiles everywhere. Napier issued an apology for his statements on Monday, walking back his position on the issue.
Napier was one of the 115 Cardinals who helped elect Pope Francis I last week.
During his radio interview, Napier said,
What do you do with disorders? You have got to try and put them right. If I as a normal being choose to break the law knowing that I am breaking the law, then I think I need to be punished.
From my experience paedophilia is actually an illness. It is not a criminal condition, it is an illness.
This wasn't the first time Napier had defended pedophiles. In 2002, in the wake of the Catholic Church dealing with a massive pedophilia scandal, Napier refused to expel priests from South African churches who had committed pedophilia
