On Friday, a transient was arrested in the carjacking case that had Los Angeles dog lovers looking for a 10-year-old yellow lab named Maru. Maru was found dead on Monday after an anonymous phone call to the LAPD.
The suspect, Danny Fis, 29, was arrested and charged Friday night with felony animal cruelty. Fis is being held in lieu of $45,000 bail. When asked if he knew a dog was in the van that he parked at a Studio City golf club, Fis nodded yes.
The Honda Odyssey was stolen from the parking lot at 12507 Ventura Boulevard, at Whitsett Avenue and found two days later at 4100 block of Whitsett Avenue. This was less than a quarter mile away from the location the vehicle was stolen. The dog was dead inside the car, mostly likely dying from heat exhaustion.
Police used surveillance footage to identify the Fis. It was Maru's owner, Nayo Mateo who spotted the subject in Studio City and Fis was apprehended not far from where the left the van parked.
Two organizations had raised money for a reward: Mutt Match L.A. and PETA. It is not clear to whom the reward will go at this point.
