Car races on ice to be featured at the Lake George Winter Carnival this weekend

UPDATE: Ice conditions Friday morning have caused the AMEC to declare the lake "not raceable." Races cancelled. Other Lake George Winter Carnival events will be held as scheduled.

The Adirondack Motor Enthusiast Club (AMEC) is set to hold their biggest event of the year at the Lake George Winter Carnival this Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 22-23. These sanctioned races feature street legal and modified cars.

Registered drivers will meet at 10:30 a.m. both days for practice, followed by the races. Bitter cold temperatures earlier in the season have produced a solid foundation of ice on Lake George, but a recent warming trend has made for slushy conditions with standing water on the icy surface. Spectators should expect a wet event.

Also scheduled for this Lake George Winter Carnival 2014 final weekend is a chicken wing cook-off in Shepard Park at noon on Saturday. For $5, sample chicken wings from area restaurants and cast a vote for your favorite.

A bonfire on the beach, with makings for s’mores, is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Saturday followed by 6:30 p.m. fireworks over the lake.
