Summer car shows and cruise nights are well underway for 2014. Every Friday night, at the Lowes' store in Abingdon, Maryland, large numbers of enthusiasts of classic, hot rod, rat rod, and custom cars, trucks and motorcycles roam up and down the rows of vehicles remembering long ago races and dreaming about tomorrow's rides. This year some nights have already surpassed 400 cars on display.

This is the eighth year of the Lowes' Cruise night, which starts at 4:30 every Friday and goes until 10 p.m. The vehicles on display are usually accompanied by the owners who are more than happy to discuss the finer points of their rides Some evenings the cars and their drivers stick around later, as visitors and fellow cruisers are reluctant to leave a good time. Regulars who bring their vehicles are affectionately known as the Lowes' Cruisers.

One owner, of a recently purchased 1976 Corvette Sting Ray, let visitors sit in his vehicle while pictures were taken of them in their "dream" car. Other owners talked about yesterday's glory when their hot rods ruled the quarter mile. Sometimes discussions even turn to business as car prices and parts availability, or the best place for body work are chatted about in detail.

As guests walk the various isles they often see sections of the parking lot for the Nissan and Hyundai sports cars, low riders, and the traditional 50's and 60's era classic cars. Corvettes were well represented as were Mustangs and all manner of SS model Chevrolets. This particular evening two Lotus cars drew a lot of attention. Even military equipment shows up from time to time. This is a great place for the car enthusiast, young or old, male or female, to come and discuss the making of a particular type of car and what accessories are available for their rides.

If you are coming out to admire the vehicles or are bringing your car, truck or motorcycle, there is a voluntary donation of $1 requested as you enter. The donations provide for Lowes' gift cards and prizes which are raffled off throughout the evening. There are food vendors and even entertainment provided throughout the evening by "Movies and Music by Tom" which adds a nice backdrop while touring through the various types of cars, trucks and motorcycles.

In addition to the Friday night cruises, the Cruisers are planning a special cruise night to honor the hobby of car collection and restoration. The event will include a vendor related day with local car service vendors and anything related to cars. This will be set up for visitors to learn more about the types of services and products available in the area. This is a great idea for those new to the collecting and restoring hobby. The Cruisers also are planning a return of the "Real Man's Yard Sale" this Fall.

The Lowes' store and adjacent lot are located at 414 Constant Friendship Blvd. Abingdon, Maryland 21009. Hope to see you there.
