Car crashes into CNN center in Atlanta: Driver smoked pot shortly before crash

A car crash into the CNN Center in downtown Atlanta early Friday morning landed the driver, 22-year-old Gerlmy Javon Todd, under arrest for driving under the influence, reckless driving and drug possession. Todd was found with marijuana in his vehicle, and admitted to police that he had smoked up in his car shortly before the crash.

Todd was driving a Mercedez Benz when he smashed into the glass entryway on the building’s north side at approximately 4:15 a.m. Friday morning. Although it was early in the morning, CNN employees were in the building, though no one was injured in the crash.

Raw video, taken by the Associated Press and seen above, shows police reviewing the crash and backing the car out of the gaping glass hole.

Fox News reported that by 7 a.m., “workers were sweeping glass shards from the floor. The lobby was open, but yellow tape blocked off the section where the car went through. A section of glass of around 10 feet high and about 15 feet long was completely gone.”

While Todd was not seriously injured, a recent study showed that the number of fatal car crashes in which pot use was a factor has tripled in a ten-year period from 2000 to 2010.

The study, conducted and published by Columbia University and reported on by MSN Autos, shows that the number of vehicle accidents where drivers were impaired by the use of marijuana have increased three-fold in the last 10 years.

Those statistics “could raise new concerns about the growing push to legalize weed, a movement that has gained momentum since both Colorado and Washington approved the public use of the drug last year,” says the editorial piece at MSN Autos.
