Turning points are designed to test a person’s resolve and a difficult situation can either strengthen or you tear down. Demetria Guillory had a defining moment six years ago after receiving some disheartening news. She turned that occasion into a positive experience which eventually led to a life’s passion. As dgdafotographer, she uses an artistic eye to freeze time and produce dynamic photography.

What is it about photography that inspires you?

In 2008, an ophthalmologist examined my eyes and found I had a scratched cornea and would eventually go blind. I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to see so I began to appreciate what I could see. I began to capture family moments and haven’t stopped since. The scratch healed and my vision improved. I learned not to take anything for granted, which inspires me to this day.

How fun is it to chronicle Dallas events as well as local celebrities?

So much fun! When you love what you do you will never work a day in your life. I enjoy capturing people smiling and having fun. People get dressed to go to an event but will never remember without photo proof. I have provided memories to people that will last forever.

What services do you provide?

All types. I mainly provide portraits, head shots, fashion photography, sports, weddings and events. I also provide alter ego photography where a person is able to be photographed with two to three different looks in conflict with each other.

How do you choose an outside location for photo shoots?

It definitely depends on the particular look you may want which is discussed during a pre-consultation. I would suggest beautiful scenery such as a park or cityscape, waterfronts, lakes and ponds or downtown urban areas. The Dallas Arboretum is a good choice as well.

Any advice for budding photographers?

Be passionate about your craft. It will show in your work. Don’t compare your work to anyone else; compete with yourself to be better each time you shoot.
