According to the Canadian Hockey League website on Thursday, the captains were announced for the 2014 Canadian Hockey League Top Prospects Game in Calgary on January 15.
Sam Reinhart of the Kootenay Ice will be the captain for Team Cherry, coached by former Calgary Flame Jim Peplinski, while Aaron Ekblad of the Barrie Colts will be the captain for Team Orr, coached by former Calgary Flame Tim Hunter.
This season, Reinhart, a left winger from Vancouver, British Columbia, has 16 goals and 34 assists for 50 points in 33 games, while Ekblad, a defenseman from Belle River, Ontario, has 10 goals and 15 assists for 25 points in 29 games. Reinhart and Ekblad also represented Canada at the 2014 World Junior Hockey Championship in Malmo, Sweden and are projected to be drafted high in the 2014 National Hockey League Entry Draft.
Reinhart also has a strong Calgary connection because his father Paul played for the Calgary Flames from 1980-1988 and his brother Max has played 15 games for the Flames over the last two seasons.
Another interesting note is that Paul Reinhart will be an assistant coach on Team Cherry. Reinhart and Peplinski are very good friends as they have were the best man at each other's weddings.
