Two classic kids shows are coming to DVD, according to announcements over the last few days. Newly announced are the first season of Captain Planet and the Planeteers, and the complete H.R. Pufnstuf.

The website reports that has a pre-order listing for Captain Planet and the Planeteers - Season 1, set for a April 19 release, in advance of Earth Day. To be released through Shout! Factory, neither Shout! or Warner Bros. has released an official announcement yet. The first season totals 600 minutes over 4 discs, and is currently US$20.99 on Amazon, 30% off the list price of US$29.93.

There were three seasons of Captain Planet and the Planeteers, and three of The New Adventures of Captain Planet, totalling 113 episodes. Once Shout! Factory officially announces the first season set's release, it'll be interesting to see at what pace the others come out. The only other DVD release, a four episode disc available through the Captain Planet Foundation, has sold out.

From a series with over a hundred episodes to one with just 17, reports the January 18 release date for H.R. Pufnstuf - The Complete Series is bumped back to April 12.

The Canadian list price for The Complete Series is $24.95, $17.49 on; the collector's edition with a Bobblehead is $34.95, $24.49 on

Certainly better price than the 2004 release of the series: there's one new copy on Amazon Canada for $236.71, one used for $135.79. Yeesh. (In the US, it's a bit saner at $59.84, but it's still not worth it with the new release.)
