It's no secret that Captain Andy Hillstrand and his brother Captain Jon are big fans of football. The F/V Time Bandit always has an American flag and the Time Bandit logo of a skull and cross bones flapping in the Bering Sea winds. However, according to Long Island Newsday on Jan. 25, 2014, Captains Andy and Jon Hillstrand hoisted a third flag in honor of the Seahawks. This year, it is the Seahawks vs. Broncos in the 2014 Super Bowl.
Captain Andy is busy fishing for opilio crabs, but he took time out to talk to the Long Island Newsday reporter via satellite phone. "The Seahawks, they're a huge, huge team out here for sure. The guys can't believe they're in the Super Bowl right now. Those guys are shocked."
It is rare that the men out on the Bering Sea ever get to attend the Super Bowl. In the 33 years of his fishing career, Captain Andy watched the Super Bowl twice on a small black and white TV. This year, Captain Andy and his crew have a plan. They hope to stuff 170,000 pounds of crab in their tanks before they can head for King Cove, Alaska. "We got hurricanes, we got all kinds of stuff trying to slow us down, but we'll try to do our best. We should be loaded and headed in on the 31st. It takes us two days to get there, so we should show up the morning of the Super Bowl. Hopefully."
When asked if he thought that the Seahawks had a chance at winning the Super Bowl, Captain Andy said that he didn’t. He predicts that the Broncos will win by seven. “Peyton Manning is going to do what he needs to do . . . The thing with Peyton Manning is he wants another Super Bowl so bad. And he's older now. He's like me, he's the old dog. He's trying to get what might be his last Super Bowl ring."
Captain Andy admits that the New England Patriots are his favorite team. Even though they are out at sea, they still keep up with football. Captain Andy monitors the CB radio for updates. He also receives scores and play-by-play action via satellite phone. He then relays the news to the crew out on deck.
Right now, the Discovery channel is filming the 10th season of the "Deadliest Catch." When the show airs, we will see what the captains and crew does when the game ends. Will they celebrate a victory in true Time Bandit fashion with fireworks and guns? No matter the outcome of the game, you can count on the Time Bandit crew to keep their fans entertained.
