'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' is No. 1 in U.S.; 'Rio 2' debuts at No. 2

For the second weekend in a row, Marvel Studios/Walt Disney Pictures' "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" was No. 1 at the U.S. and Canadian box office for the weekend ending April 13, 2014. According to a Box Office Mojo report published on April 13, the superhero sequel "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" (starring Chris Evans as Captain America) had 41.4 million in ticket sales for the weekend ending April 13, 2014.

Three other movies opened in wide release in the U.S. and Canada on April 11, 2014:

20th Century Fox's animated sequel "Rio 2" (about a group of birds in the Amazon forest) came in a close second place. The movie (whose voice actors include Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway) debuted at No. 2, with $39 million in ticket sales.

Relativity Media's horror flick "Oculus" debuted at No. 3, with $12 million

Summit Entertainment's football drama "Draft Day" debuted at No. 4, with $9.75 million in ticket sales.

According to Box Office Mojo, here are the Top 5 movies in the U.S. and Canada for the weekend ending April 13, 2014:

1. "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" — $41.4 million

2. "Rio 2" — $39 million

3. "Oculus" — $12 million

4. "Draft Day" — $9.75 million

5. "Divergent" — $7.5 million

And here are the opening-weekend box-office numbers for the movies that opened in limited release on April 11, 2014:

  • "Joe" — $106,000 from 48 theaters (Also released on VOD on April 11, 2014)
  • "Only Lovers Left Alive" — $97,000 from four theaters
  • "The Railway Man" — $64,500 from four theaters
  • "Cuban Fury" — $55,500 from 79 theaters
  • "Dancing in Jaffa" — $16,000 from 2 theaters (Also released on VOD on April 11, 2014)
  • "Hateship Loveship" — $7,000 from one theater (Also released on VOD on April 11, 2014)
