Hollywood has once again unleashed a threat on Washington, D.C., and an old-fashioned superhero is called to protect our freedom in the new film “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”
The latest attack on our nation's capital comes from the Winter Soldier, who is a brainwashed assassin and was formerly the best friend of Steve Rogers, also known as Captain America.
There have been a few films where heroic characters were needed to save D.C. and prevent the destruction of the city's iconic buildings.
Not surprisingly, terrorists are the main threat to our liberty in movies and they often target America's capital.
Among the heroes coming to the capital's aid is Channing Tatum, who succeeded in saving the president of the United States, but not before the White House was destroyed in “White House Down.”
The continuous assault on the White House doesn't end there.
Gerard Butler also saved the president of the United States after an attack and hostile takeover of the White House in “Olympus Has Fallen.” The Washington Monument also takes a hit in the film.
The city has been demolished time and time again by a variety of other villains, including aliens and even climate change.
In the film “2012,” the Washington Monument and the White House became some of the many victims of the apocalypse.
Will Smith was not able to protect the White House from annihilation in “Independence Day,” but he does eventually stop the extraterrestrials and save the world with the help of Jeff Goldblum.
But the best person to save D.C. has to be the iconic Captain America. He was created as a super soldier to defend our country and our capital, and is the ultimate patriot.
While it might be hard watching images of destruction on film, it's always comforting to see a handsome man in red, white and blue with an indestructible defense shield save the city, the country and the world.
“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is in theaters now.
