‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ held off the strong debut of ‘Heaven is for Real' to top the box office for a third straight weekend, according to industry figures reported by Box Office Mojo on Monday.
The Marvel superhero sequel grossed $25.5 million in ticket sales from Friday to Sunday for a total of $200.5 million since opening April 4. ‘Winter Soldier’ passed the lifetime domestic gross of ‘Captain America: The First Avenger,’ which finished with $176.6 million in 2011.
Christian drama ‘Heaven is for Real’ opened at No. 2, earning $22.5 million for a total of $29.5 million since opening Wednesday.
Animated comedy adventure sequel ‘Rio 2’ dipped one spot to No. 3 in its second weekend, earning $22.1 million for a total of $75 million since opening April 11. ‘Rio 2’ is just behind the pace of the original 'Rio,' which earned $80.8 million through its second weekend in 2011.
Sci-fi thriller ‘Transcendence’ starring Johnny Depp debuted at a disappointing No. 4 with $10.8 million.
Horror-comedy sequel ‘A Haunted House 2’ opened at No. 5 with $8.8 million, which is less than half of what the 2013 original earned during its debut weekend.
The only other major new release, Disneynature documentary ‘Bears,’ opened at No. 10 with $4.7 million.
