'Captain America' captures another win

A battle did indeed brew at the box office all weekend long, but the first avenger emerged victorious. "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" captured the crown and posted its second win.

"Rio 2" and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" battled back and forth and it was close, $41.4 million to $39 million. The $39 million for "Rio 2" was on par with the first film.

The films had nearly the same theater count as well (3,948 for "Rio 2" and 3,938 for "Captain America"). That was good news for the box office as one film didn't dominate and leave the others in the dust. There was plenty of action and animation to satisfy the audience, and families.

The final numbers will be determined with the actuals (they come out later). Of course, these are the estimates and a recount may be in order. The weekend started with the birds winning Friday and then Saturday had the superhero surging.

The drop for "Captain America" was around 56 percent and staying at No. 1 did surprise some. Great weather finally arrived in many parts of the United States and that means, go outside and get away from indoor activities; especially for families. But, was that the reason for the surge of "Captain America" as the weekend progressed? Perhaps, but the film is good. That always helps.

"Oculus" saw its own reflection in the mirror and nobody liked it. Enough said. "The Railway Man," in four theaters scored a $16,125 per screen average but "Only Lovers Left Alive" fared better. Its per screen average was $24,250.

"Heaven Is For Real" opens on Wednesday as Holy Week is here and Easter arrives April 20.
