The City of Sacramento, in partnership with the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Central Valley has decided to launch a design competition for the Downtown Capitol Mall. The competition has been titled "Catalyst" referencing the hopes that a new design will rejuvenate the downtown area and bring in more commercial activity.
Catalyst is an "open ideas competition" that is seeking urban and architectural designs for 6-block Capital Mall Corridor between the Capitol building the Tower Bridge. Kristopher Barkley, the AIA Central Valley competition liaison said, ”We are seeking big ideas that will create an inviting community gathering place and a compelling destination for visitors to our region and state.”
Submission Guidelines for the competition are as follows:
- All submissions will be received electronically via uploads to the Competition EFT site and must be received by 6:00 PST on September 20th, 2011.
- Two presentation “boards” are to be submitted that will clearly define the entrant’s design including all plans, graphic representations, renderings and narratives. Each board shall be limited to 3600 x 2700 pixels in landscape format (24 x 18” @ 150 pixels per inch) and are to be saved as a single, two-page PDF file. The file size shall not exceed 8MB in size.
- Presentation boards shall also clearly include the registration number in the upper right hand corner in a sans serif type that is at least 100 pixels high.
- Please note that winners will be requested to provide higher resolution versions of their submissions for printing purposes (40 x 30” @ 300 ppi or the equivalent of 12,000 x 9000 pixels) so entrants may want to work at this higher resolution and then down-sample for submission.
- The file shall be named as the entry number (i.e. 00217.pdf for registration number 00217) and uploaded to the link that will be provided after registration.
The final submission date for your entry is September 20, 2011. There is a $200 entry fee for professionals. There is also a separate submission category for students. While students do not have to pay an entry fee to compete, they will not be eligible for cash prizes under this category. The first-prize winner will receive $20,000; second-prize $10,000; third-prize $5,000. Winners will be announced in mid-October.
