The countdown is hastily approaching zero hour for the commencement of the Statesmen Capitol 10k race in Austin, Texas. Capitol 10k, is a 10,000 kilometer (or 6.2 miles) track race to benefit Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas. Participants can register competitively for the timed race; or just for fun in the walk/run event.
Registration for Capitol 10k is still open, and late registration remains available on race days. Race day registration fees range from $33 to $50. All participants will assemble at the Austin Convention Center March 25, 2012 for fees and other important race day information. Individuals from Austin and surrounding areas flocking to participate in the 35th anniversary Capitol 10k are encouraged to register friends along with them to tackle the 6.2 mile course.
Training requirements for such a distance varies from person-to-person, but here are some helpful tips for race day survival:
- Studies have shown that a light 10-15 minute jog is the best way to warm-up before strenuous activity. Follow up after with light stretching, and remember to stay warm to prevent injury.
- Be accustomed to the distance. Using treadmill at home, or a workout facility, is a practical way to train your body to handle the 10k distance—especially if you have little free time for training, but a little is better than nothing.
- Make sure you are prepared for a crowd. Arriving early will help you avoid hordes of people scurrying around, trying to find where they need to be.
- Double check your gear. Make sure everything is in working shape especially your shoes.
- Hydrate. It is best to do your hydrating the day before, but if you are unsure, than drink at least a bottle of water on your way to the race; and be sure to use the facilities when you arrive followed immediately by drinking another bottle.
- Lubricant. Lubricate with petroleum jelly on areas most susceptible to chaffing.
- Have a good attitude. Remember this is all for fun, and all proceeds go to charity. Feel good about what you’re doing and try your best.
*Side note: H.E.B is hosting a costume contest for race participants. Winners will receive $1000 gift cards. To compete, have your photo taken in the Bright room area on Auditorium Shores with your race bib number visible. Last year’s winners include: Laura Marely, Brooke Dungen, Cheryl Waterman, Linda Terry, Susan Waterman and Julia Waterman.
