NBC San Diego is reporting today that a hat has led police to a suspect in the murder of a Chula Vista businessman who was gunned down during a home invasion 14 years ago. Chula Vista police say, Joe Mora, 32, is in custody after DNA recovered from a cap found at the crime scene led investigators to him. For the past 14 years, police have been investigating the mysterious murder of Sergio Morales.
In 1999, Morales, 54, was beaten and shot when he answered the door of his home. Morales' wife told police that a woman knocked on the door and a man tried to force his way inside the residence. The struggle moved to the front porch of the home, where the victim was shot and killed.
When police arrived on the scene at Paseo Burga in Chula Vista, they found the victim dead from gunshot wounds, according to UT Sandiego.
Police investigators initially received the DNA match in 2009 but have spent the past several years building a case against Mora.
Joe Mora is being held in the San Diego County Jail. Police are still trying to identify the woman who accompanied him on the day of the murder.
