CAOO inspires dignity and confidence through paddlesports

Based on the ( CAOO) website the Buffalo Bills Alumni Foundation presented Cape Ability Outrigger Ohana, Inc.( CAOO) with a $5,000 check December 18, 2013 at their annual Charity Check Presentation Luncheon at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Buffalo, New York. Anna Stolzenburg, Correspondent for The Buffalo Bills News confirmed on December 27 2013, “The Buffalo Bills Alumni Foundation has a rich relationship with the Western New York community, and as of last week has donated over $100,000 to local charities in the past year and over $2 million in the past 20 years.”

One of the programs she mentions in her press release is the Cape Ability Outrigger Ohana, Inc., Wounded Warrior Project. “The Alumni continue to be loyal supporters of CAOO’s Wounded Warrior program; they have donated funds annually since our chapter’s formation in 2005 and provided special activities for our Wounded Warriors such as attendance at the Buffalo Bills Alumni Gala and the VIP Tailgate Parties prior to the Bills’ home games that coincide with the Rochester River Challenge weekend. Special thanks to Ed Rutkowski who has coordinated the activities to ensure that the Wounded Warriors always receive a warm welcome.”

Cape Ability Outrigger Ohana, Inc. (CAOO) provides paddling opportunities to individuals of all abilities. CAOO focuses on providing inclusive outrigger canoeing programs to people living in Western New York (Greater Rochester and Greater Buffalo areas).

The outrigger canoes used for CAOO group programming are DC-8s (Double-Canoe that seats 8 people) and are very stable, making it ideal for introducing people to the water and safe for individuals who have a physical, intellectual, or emotional challenge. A trained steersperson always guides the boat and ensures a safe and fun experience for the paddlers.

(CAOO) provides four programs for paddlers that participate in their Program:

  • Outrigger Canoeing
  • Kayaking
  • Rochester River Challenge
  • Warfighter Sports Events

The Rochester River Challenge on September 14, 2014 is one of the major events. Jan Whittaker, former world champion and Gold Medal winner founded (CAOO). Cape Ability Outrigger Ohana is a chapter of Disabled Sports USA (DSUSA). Disabled Vietnam Veterans founded DSUSA in 1967.
