On Saturday, August 9, spend a night in Brickell enjoying drinks and happy hour specials to support a worthy cause. Conscious Acts of Kindness (CAOK) will host its first Pub Crawl to benefit the Motor Neurone Disease Association. The crawl will span five of Brickell's hottest bars - beginning at Batch Gastropub, continuing to Fado Irish Pub, Blue Martini, and Brother Jimmy's and ending at Tobacco Road. Pub crawlers receive a complimentary drink at each bar and other "crawler specials."
"We make positive change to the world through conscious actions," said Ortiz. "Bending down to pick up piece of paper, opening doors for strangers. It's all about consciousness that your actions will make the world a better place."
CAOK began as a spin-off of Provider, a clothing line created by Ortiz to encourage consumers to give back to the community and become a "provider." As Provider and its mission became increasingly popular, more individuals began to "pay it forward" by going into the community with the intention of helping others. As the movement grew, Ortiz formed a non-profit organization to facilitate fundraising for larger acts of kindness.
"There is no act too small or too big to be an act of kindness," Ortiz said. "Size does not quantify the quality of the act."
Recently, Conscious Acts of Kindness partnered with the Miami Heat and the Irie Foundation to surprise Henry, a child at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital fighting cancer, with two VIP tickets to a Miami Heat game. CAOK also traveled to Bali where the organization purchased food from a street vendor and provided the entire village with breakfast. On Valentine's Day, CAOK partnered with You Are Miami Real Estate to distribute 1,000 roses throughout Downtown Miami and to the residents of The Palace, Miami's largest assisted living facility. Attached to each rose was the note, "You are loved! Happy Valentine's Day."
The organization is unique in that it does not focus on a specific cause or idea. Rather, CAOK promotes social awareness and kindness by helping others, donating to various causes and hosting events that benefit a particular cause or organization. At each event, a percentage of the funds raised is donated to the designated cause or organization. According to Ortiz, the goal is to spotlight global issues and raise awareness through fun events and charitable giving - whether it be bowling to benefit the Irie Foundation, providing 500 kites to children in India, distributing 1,000 balloons to promote cancer awareness or paying someone's parking meter in Miami Beach.
"We want to help other non-profits by creating an event that's trendy and fun and has a philanthropic thread to hold the whole thing together," said Ortiz.
The Pub Crawl in Brickell is CAOK's first bar crawl, but certainly not the last. Ortiz plans to host a bar crawl every few months, with different organizations named as the beneficiaries. This Saturday's crawl is capped at 300 people and more than 200 people have already registered to attend. Secure a spot now and enjoy a night in Brickell while helping perform future conscious acts of kindness.
