Russ Canzler had three hits including a pair of doubles with two RBI, leading a balanced effort as the Durham Bulls took a 6-5 victory over the visiting Rochester Red Wings.
The result, in the opener of their four-game series, left the Bulls with a 2 ½-game lead over the second-place Gwinnett Braves in the International League’s South Division.
Earlier in the day, Bulls southpaw Matt Moore was named the IL’s pitcher of the week for games ending Sunday.
Stephen Vogt chipped in three hits including a double with two RBI, while John Matulia added three hits including a double as the Bulls outhit the visitors 14-11.
Alex Torres (8-6) was the winning pitcher while Adam Russell picked up his first save. Eric Hacker (6-11) took the loss.
Mike Hollimon and Dustin Martin each homered for the Red Wings, while Justin Morneau had two hits including a double with an RBI in his Major League rehab appearance.
Game 2 of the four-game set is Tuesday night at 7:05, with Andy Sonnanstine scheduled for the Bulls against Scott Diamond (4-11).
Catcher John Jaso is with the Bulls on a rehab assignment and is set to be in the lineup.
