According to TSN, the Vancouver Canucks defeated the Calgary Flames 5-1 on Sunday evening in National Hockey League action. It was the final regular season game for both teams who will be missing the Stanley Cup playoffs this year.

The story of the game was Daniel Sedin. The Swedish superstar scored two first period goals and recorded eight shots on net, but was the victim of a vicious hit by Flames forward Paul Byron in the second period. Byron hit Sedin from behind and received a five minute major penalty for boarding and a game misconduct for the infraction.

Daniel Sedin's twin brother Henrik Sedin also had a multi-point game for the Canucks as he had two assists. It was a very disappointing year for both Sedin twins. Henrik Sedin had 50 points and Daniel Sedin had 47 points. Both totals were well off the pace of their 90+ point totals just three years ago when Vancouver went to game seven of the Stanley Cup Finals before losing to the Boston Bruins.

Frank Corrado, a Canucks rookie defenseman from Toronto, scored his first National Hockey League goal at 9:12 of the second period, to put the Canucks up 3-0 at the time. Flames rookie Johnny Gaudreau, who the Flames signed to a contract on Friday, the day he won the 2014 Hobey Baker Award, scored the lone Flames goal in his first National Hockey League game.

With the win, Vancouver improved to 36-35-11, while Calgary dropped to 35-40-7. The Canucks rebounded after losing 5-2 to Edmonton on Saturday. Canucks goaltender Jacob Markstrom got his first win with the Canucks since being traded from the Florida Panthers for Roberto Luongo on March 4.

The 2014 Stanley Cup playoffs start on Wednesday with three games--Montreal at Tampa Bay, Columbus at Pittsburgh and Dallas at Anaheim.
