"It's about time" was her campaign slogan. People in Mayfield are still saying it, the day after voters elected Teresa Cantrell as their first female mayor.
Cantrell defeated Democratic incumbent, Arthur Byrn, by a margin of 972 votes. Cantrell walked away with a whopping 67% of votes in the city election. Cantrell continued to serve as the Executive Administrator to the mayor while campaigning for the position.
Cantrell, a native of Mayfield, has worked for the City of Mayfield for 21 years. Her position as the Executive Administrator to the mayor’s office has provided the continuity the community came to trust. One Mayfield resident told the examiner.com, “Teresa has run the city for the last 10 years, making sure everything that needed to get done, got done”.
Cantrell and her family are pleased with the outcome, but relieved that the campaigning is over. “Now the real work begins”, Cantrell tells the examiner.com. Cantrell should make a smooth transition into the mayor’s role, as she is familiar with all aspects of the duties of the office and the operations of the city. The only question left is whether she will move into the mayor’s office, or stay in the one she has occupied for the last 21 years.
The people of Mayfield, Kentucky have spoken loud and clear, “it’s about time.”
