Canton Symphony Orchestra Presents A World Premiere!
March 23, 2013 will be an historic date for the Canton Orchestra as they present a world premiere of American Composer Claude Baker’s Canti Guerrieri ed Amorosi (Songs of War and Love) in honor of the Canton Orchestra’s 75th season.
The concert will be performed at Umstattd Performing Arts Hall (located at 2323 17th Street, Canton, Ohio) and will begin at 8:00 p.m. The commission is the result of a grant from the Meet The Composer Foundation and is sponsored in part by Timken, The Herbert W.Hoover Foundation and the McPeek family (in memory of Nancy McPeek)
Speaking about the piece, Mr. Baker said “[It] is intended as a tribute to both the Canton Symphony and its long-time Music Director Gerhardt Zimmermann”. The concert program will also include Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 in d minor and Beethoven’s popular Leonore Overture No. 3. Prior to the performance, there will be a Performance Prelude discussion of the program’s music that will be led by Canton Symphony’s Assistant Conductor, Rachel Waddell and will begin at 7:00 p.m. The pre-concert talk is free to all ticket holders and is sponsored bythe Gibbs Family Limited Partnership.

Canton Symphony Orchestra Presents “Here to Stay – The Gershwins” April 6, 2013
Multimedia Performance Celebrates the Legacies of George and Ira Gershwin
The Canton Symphony Orchestra will be performing “Here to Stay – The Gershwins” on April 6 at Umstattd Performing Arts Hall. This multi media concert pays homage and celebrates the genius of two of the greatest music collaborators in history, Ira and George Geshwin.
The event is produced by Todd Gershwin and Daniel Chilewich of Premiere Media, LLC with Gerhardt Zimmermann conducting. “Here to Stay” is a rare glimpse into the lives of these two musical powerhouses using family photos, rare film clips and state of the art visuals giving the audience a unique view of the composers lives.
Kevin Cole (today’s leading Gershwin interpreter) will be the featured pianist. Joining him will be award winning soprano Sylvia McNair and dancing sensation Daniel Gardner. The music and lyrics for the show were provided through special arrangement with members of the George Gershwin family and the Ira and Leonore Gershwin Trusts.
