As their western road trip continues, the Canton Charge managed a deciding victory of 104-85 over the Santa Cruz Warriors. The margin of victory is the highest to date this season. The contest was held at the Kaiser Permanente Arena on Saturday night. The win brings up Canton’s season record to 10-5 while Santa Cruz falls to 10-7.
Kevin Jones was the hot hand in the first quarter when he dropped in his first six attempts from the field which accounted for half of the Charge’s first 24 points. As a team, Canton shot 77% in 13-of-17 attempts taking a 35-24 lead at the end of the first quarter. Bo Spencer scored 10 points of his own off the bench in the first twelve minutes.
Canton played tough in the second quarter and was ahead by as many as 18 points as they continued to make key baskets by a variety of players. In total, there were 17 buckets out of 25 tries as they took a 65-52 lead to the lockers at the half. Santa Cruz stayed in the game by posting 24 of their 28 in the paint but on the opposite end of the court, Canton’s Michael Lee netted 13 points with 6-of-7 shooting.
The Charge came out swinging in the third with a 14-4 run with five forced turnovers as they ran up the score to 78-53. By keeping the Warriors to just 14 points for the quarter, they went into the final stretch with a comfortable 84-66 lead.
With 9:37 left in the game, Santa Cruz went on a 10-0 tear in just 3:15 getting within single digits but Canton answered with a 16-6 run keeping the team in the lead from the 9:04 mark in the first quarter clear to the end of the game.
For Canton, Jones finished with 19 points on 9-of-18 shooting with nine rebounds in 28 minutes. Jorge Gutierrez displayed an all-around effort of 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting with nine rebounds, seven assists and one block in 36 minutes. Spencer scored 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting in 29 minutes. Shane Edwards added seven points, 13 rebounds and three steals in 38 minutes.
Santa Cruz was paced by Cameron Jones’ 18 points on 8-of-15 shooting with four assists in 32 minutes. Dwayne Dedmon added a double-double of 11 points and 11 boards in 30 minutes. Hilton Armstrong scored 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting with eight rebounds and two blocks in 30 minutes. Dominic McGuire scored 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting with six rebounds in 27 minutes of relief.
