Canton Charge wins fifth game in a row to begin 2013-2014 season

The Canton Charge handed the Erie Bay Hawks their fifth defeat of the season on the way to their 5-0 record. The scoreboard showed 95-88 in favor of the charge at the Erie Insurance Arena this past Saturday night.

Canton took first quarter honors with a 20-17 lead by limiting Erie to 4 of 17 shots from the field. The BayHawks’ Jeremy Tyler kept them in the game by scoring 10 points that included hitting 6 out of 8 from the free throw line. On our end of the court, Antoine Agudio led Canton with seven points on 3 out of 4 shooting with three steals.

Both teams came out strong offensively in the second with Erie hitting 8 out of 14 for 57% and Canton 11 out of 21 for 52%. A total of ten different Charge players made their way into the scoring column in the first half with Canton holding a 48-42 edge at intermission.

The BayHawks came out strong in the third with an 11-2 run that saw six Charge missed shots and two turnovers on eight consecutive possessions enabling Erie to take a 51-50 lead with 8:26 left in the third period. The game seesawed with four lead changes and three ties and the teams ended up tied at 67 going into the home stretch.

The fourth quarter continued with four lead changes and three ties until with 2:57 left to play and Canton down by one, Agudio found Shane Edwards under the basket for a lay-up to pull ahead. Jeremy Tyler was fouled at the opposite end of the court but missed both free-throws. Canton then went on a tear hitting seven of their final eight shots from the free-throw line while blocking two Erie shots and forcing six misses. This 9-3 run sealed the game in favor of Canton.

Both on assignment from the Cleveland Cavaliers, Henry Sims poured in 17 points with eight rebounds in 21 minutes while Carrick Felix netted nine points on 3-of-6 shooting and grabbed five boards in 21 minutes. The 13th overall pick in this year’s NBA D-League Draft, Bo Spencer had an all-around effort of 13 points, nine rebounds, eight assists, one steal and two blocks starting at point guard for the injured Jorge Gutierrez. Kevin Jones added 17 points and seven rebounds in 32 minutes. All 11 Charge players in uniform got in the scoring column.

Tyler finished with a game-high 22 points, including 10-of-15 from the charity stripe, and six rebounds in 37 minutes for Erie. Davis netted 20 points, grabbed eight rebounds and nabbed two steals in 37 minutes. CJ Leslie contributed 17 points on 8-of-12 shooting with five boards and two assists in 36 minutes.
Canton will next make their first-ever trip to Delaware to face the 87ers tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m.
