After two losses to the Fort Wayne Mad Ants this season, the Canton Charge found a winning formula as they cruised to a 120-99 win. With the final buzzer sounding the Canton Charge had set a franchise record for field goal percentage in a game by sinking 61% Wdnesday night at the Canton Memorial Civic Center. The victory moves Canton to first place in the East Division at 15-8 while dropping Fort Wayne to 14-9. Fort Wayne still holds a 2-1 advantage in the season series so far.
It was a nip and tuck start in the game as Fort Wayne was able to create shooting opportunities with sic offensive rebounds during the first quarter which netted five second chance points. On our side of the court it was Kevin Jones and Jorge Gutierrez matching each other for eight points for the Charge. After trailing by as much as seven points, Canton rallied back to tie the score at 26-26 as the first buzzer buzzed.
The teams traded baskets to tie once more at 28-28 in the second when Canton had a 9-0 run in just 3:05. Bo Spencer was responsible for 12 points as he hit 5-of-7 for the period. The half ended with a 57-51 Charge advantage going into the locker rooms.
In an incredible display of basketball dominance, Canton went on a 20-0 run for 5:54 as they hit 8-of-9 and forced five Mad Ants turnovers. It was brutal under the rim as the Charge outshot the Mad Ants 22-6 in the paint, leading by as much as 27 on their way to a win.
Two season marks were topped in the game as Canton’s 120 points were a new season high as well as the 21 point margin of victory. Canton had came into the game with the second lowest scoring defense in the D-League, allowing just 98.5 points per game and are 12-3 for the season when holding opponents below 100.
As a team, the Charge hit 47-of-77 shots from the field with seven different players getting into the scoring column and 11 overall. Spencer led the way with 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting with three steals in 29 minutes. Jorge Gutierrez contributed an all-around effort of 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting with nine rebounds, eight assists and two steals in 28 minutes. Cleveland Cavaliers assignment Carrick Felix scored 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting in 30 minutes, while fellow Cavs rookie Sergey Karasev added six points and three rebounds in 18 minutes.
Fort Wayne was led by Ron Howard’s 22 points on 8-of-16 shooting in 30 minutes. Trey McKinney Jones added 18 points, including 12-of-12 from the free-throw line, with four rebounds and three assists in 35 minutes. Sadiel Rojas netted 16 points with five rebounds in 32 minutes. The Charge bench outscored Fort Wayne’s reserves 61-33 on the night.
