Canton Charge loses first game of road trip to Bakersfield

The Canton Charge began their extended western road trip with a loss at the Dignity Health Events Center on Thursday night to the Bakersfield Jam, 112-104. The defeat drops the Charge to 9-5 for the season while the Jam evens their mark at 8-8.

Canton started strong with Gilbert Brown contributing 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting as they pulled ahead 28-23. The Charge had 10 assists on their 12 first quarter goals out of 20 attempts from the floor for 60%.

In the second quarter, the Charge needed a 9-4 run to keep pace with the Jam at 32-32 when Bakersfield put together a 12-2 run in 3:33 to pull ahead 44-34. With the Jam outscoring the Charge 32-19 prior to the half Bakersfield took a commanding lead of 55-47 at the med game break.

The second half was all Bakersfield as Canton was unable to regain the lead. In all the Jam made 28 trips to the free-throw line for 21 points. Although Canton was able to get within one basket on three occasions, Bakersfield responded with scoring shots to keep the lead.

Brown led all scorers with 30 points on 11-of-18 shooting with six rebounds, five assists and three steals in 40 minutes. Jorge Gutierrez posted his fifth-career double-double with 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting with nine rebounds, a career-high 13 assists and four steals in 35 minutes. Shane Edwards tallied 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting with six rebounds in 32 minutes. Canton set a new franchise record for steals in a game with 15.

All five Jam starters totaled double-digit scoring, led by Jared Cunningham’s 22 that included 12-of-13 from the free-throw line and four steals in 33 minutes. Brian Butch posted 21 points with 11-of-13 from the free throw line, 14 rebounds and five assists in 36 minutes. As a team, Bakersfield hit 31-of-42 foul shots (74%), while Canton was 15-of-19 (79%).

Canton Charge Status Update

Canton Charge F/C Arinze Onuaku was experiencing soreness in his right big toe and following scans and medical evaluation, doctors diagnosed him with turf toe. He did not travel with the team and has been placed on the inactive list. He will continue to be evaluated and his status will be updated as appropriate.
