The Canton Charge is currently in Reno, Nevada at the 2014 NBA Development League Showcase. In their first of two games the Canton Charge was defeated by the Idaho Stampede 83-66. The Charge is now 10-6 for the season with the Stampede improving to 11-6.
The game started as a see-saw match as the lead changed four times with three ties thrown in for good measure. Idaho then put together 10-of-20 shots for 50% to pull ahead 23-19 in the first quarter. Pierre Jackson for the Stampede and Jorge Gutierrez the Charge matched each other with nine points each in the first quarter.
Even though Canton was only able to muster 40% shooting for the half, they managed to hang in there by copping five offensive rebounds and six second chance points. After working the ball hard inside for 28 points they managed to stay six points under at the half at 46-40.
Trailing 56-49 in the third, the Charge made a 15-8 run with nine assists to even the score at 64 each. From the 3:14 mark on in the third, Canton managed to hold Idaho scoreless for over six minutes that included seven misses and four turnovers for Idaho as Canton pulled ahead 70-64.
At 7:37 left in the game and trailing 75-68, Idaho came alive with a 14-3 run in just 4:01 to pull ahead 82-78 but Canton was not to be denied as they responded with scores on their next two possessions to tie it at 82 all with 1:55 left. Idaho managed to squeak out a victory by hitting eight foul shots combined with an 11-6 run at the end of the game.
Kevin Jones led Canton with his fifth double-double of the season in 19 points and 10 rebounds in 35 minutes. Gutierrez finished with 14 points, five rebounds and eight assists in 34 minutes. Shane Edwards added a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds in 39 minutes. Olek Czyz came off the bench to add eight points and six rebounds in 16 minutes for the Charge.
Jackson finished with a game-high 33 points on 10-of-23 shooting and eight assists in 43 minutes. Richard Howell posted a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds in 28 minutes for Idaho. Kellen Thornton came off the bench to add 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting with five rebounds in 20 minutes. Dallas Lauderdale added eight points, nine rebounds, seven blocks and two steals in 39 minutes.
