In August, Pope Francis had set aside September 30 as the date he would hold the Public Ordinary Consistory for the impending canonization of Pope John Paul II and Pope John XXIII. Many had previously speculated the canonization ceremony to occur in 2013, however due to a very busy year, John Paul II and John XXIII will be sainted at the same time in 2014.
Blessed Pope John XXIII reigned as Pontiff from October 28, 1958 until his death on June 3, 1963. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on September 3 of 2000 and is affectionately known as “Good Pope John.”
Blessed Pope John Paul II ruled the Catholic Church from October 16, 1978 until his death on April 2, 2005. Referred to as, “John Paul the Great,” Pope John Paul II was beatified on May 1, 2011 by Pope Benedict XVI, now Pope Emeritus.
