Canon has just announced the latest member of its popular Digital Rebel line, the rebel T5i, also known as the 700D in some markets. The latest Rebel, announced along with a new lens, the EF-S 18-55 IS STM, is being billed as the most-capable video dSLR in its price range.
So, what of the new Rebel?
When it comes to features, the T4i's headline feature is in its video mode. In the past (and in the present to an extent), dSLRs have struggled to be video cameras, an ongoing problem that all manufacturers have, in their own ways, sought to fix. With the T5i, Canon has tweaked its Hybrid CMOS AF System and Movie Servo AF, first introduced with the T4i. The goal: provide continuous, accurate AF for tracking of moving subjects by helping to reduce the camera’s need to “hunt”, resulting in a quick and smooth continuous AF. For added capabilities, the EOS Rebel T5i also has a built-in stereo microphone with manual audio level adjustment for manual enhancement sound quality.
As for the new highly-promoted feature, it's fluff: Creative Filters. When the Creative Filters (Art filters to the masses), one can create pictures with special effects, which are: ArtBold, Water Painting, Grainy Black and White, Soft Focus, Toy Camera, Fish- Eye, and Miniature. One can also preview the images when in live view mode.
Additionally, Canon announced an all-new lens with the camera: the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM. In Canon lingo, STM stands for Stepping Motor (STM). The benefit of the STM line: the camera will only capture the stereo sound of the scene being recorded, not that of the lens focusing.
