NYPD officer Gilberto Valle, known as the "cannibal cop," is on trial for planning to eat more than 100 women after he kidnapped, raped, and tortured them.
On March 5, 2013, his defense team rested their case in the trial that started last week.
Reuters reports that Valle cried at the conclusion of the trial. His attorney, Robert Baum stated that his client's fate is in the hands of the jury, a "huge weight for someone to bear."
Valle was arrested on Oct. 25, 2012, with officials revealing his gruesome plans to kidnap women he listed in his computer database, rape them and then eat their body parts after cooking them over a "low heat" to keep the women "alive as long as possible."
Prosecutors stated last week that Valle had at least two dozen plots involving women and at least three were real.
Over the past week, jurors have listened to the details of dozens of emails and Web chats in which Valle talked with others about murdering and eating women, including his estranged wife, Kathleen Mangan-Valle.
When he was arrested last year, police searched Valle’s computer and found the names, addresses and photos of at least 100 women he was targeting.
Authorities stated at that time that Gilberto Valle got some of his information about the women via unauthorized use of a law enforcement database.
Valle shared his gruesome plans in emails with his friends (named “CC-1″ and “CC-2″ in the official police documents below) and described plans to carry out acts of rape and cannibalism.
CC-1: “How big is your oven?”
Valle: “Big enough to fit one of these girls if I folded their legs … I know all of them … [Victim 1] I can just show up at her home unannounced … it will not alert her, and I can knock her out and wait until dark and kidnap her right out of her home.
CC-1: “You really would be better off grabbing a stranger. The first thing the police force will do is check out a friend.”
Valle: “Her parents are out-of-state.”
CC-1: “I have anesthetic gases.”
Valle: “I can make chloroform here.”
Valle also emailed his friends information on how he planned to torture the girls and his preferred method of cooking them.
Valle: “I was thinking of tying her body onto some kind of apparatus … cook her over low heat, keep her alive as long as possible.”
CC-1: ”You do know that if we don’t waste any of her there is nearly 75 pounds of food there…”
Valle: “I love that she’s asleep right now not having the slightest clue of what we have planned. Her days are numbered. I’m glad you’re on board. She does look pretty tasty.”
Reuters reports that defense attorneys showed jurors gruesome videos from the website DarkFetishNet.com on Tuesday.
They claim that this is the site that inspired Valle's plot to kidnap, rape and eat the women on his list. Some of the videos showed very graphic images, including hanging corpses and people who were mutilated.
Closing arguments in the cannibal cop case are scheduled for Thursday.
