Yesterday, while the nation had eyes and ears trained on televisions watching the drama unfold at Big Bear, another police officer lost his life in Minnesota. His name was Kody and he was a seven-year veteran of the St. Paul, Minn. Police Department.
The Italian-born, German shepherd, “K9 Kody” was stabbed to death in the line of duty while attempting to apprehend a suspect.
The following was published on the Officer Down Memorial page:
K9 Kody was stabbed to death while attempting to take down a subject while assisting members of the St. Paul Police Department, Ramsey County Sheriff's Office, and U.S. Marshals Service as they served a warrant at a home in the 700 block of Aurora Avenue.
Kody located the subject in the basement of the home but was stabbed several times by the man. Officers then fatally shot the subject.
Kody wasn’t just a dog; he was a partner, friend and family member. He gave his life, not only as an officer performing in the line-of-duty, but as a family member who paid the ultimate price for protecting his family.
Details regarding a departmental memorial service for Kody have not been announced.
Although the name of Kody’s partner wasn’t released, condolences can be sent to the St. Paul Police Department in care of Tom Smith, Chief of Police at:
367 Grove Street
St. Paul, MN 55101
