Canine circovirus has found its way into three states so far, with Michigan being the latest state to see this virus. The Canine circovirus has killed three dogs in Ohio, with many more suffering from this illness, according to M Live on Oct. 3, California is also seeing cases of the canine circovirus.
Ohio has issued a warning to its state’s veterinarians to be on the lookout for cases of the canine circovirus. Two cases have been confirmed in Michigan to date. Both the animals also had other organisms besides the canine circovirus, so vets are trying to decipher which symptoms are attributed to circovirus and which are caused by the other illness.
Symptoms of the circovirus include:
Loss of appetite
The Diagnostic Center for Population and Animal Health at the Michigan State University notes that nearly 70 percent of the dogs demonstrating clinical symptoms of the circovirus and tested positive for the virus were also infected with other viruses or bacteria that is known to cause disease.
Veterinarians are still trying to determine if it is another virus responsible for the illness and death of dogs or if it is the canine circovirus that’s responsible for the devastation.
Because two illnesses coincide in the dogs seen so far it is hard to tease out just what illness is causing the serious symptoms. Canine circovirus has been found in the feces of healthy dogs too.
