Saturday, July 12, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (43-1-1) will face off against Erislandy Lara (19-1-2) in a junior middleweight showdown. The bout will be held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada and televised on Showtime PPV.
For Canelo, the bout is an opportunity for him to put together his second consecutive victory after suffering his first career loss against Floyd Mayweather Jr. Canelo is coming off an impressive victory over Alfredo Angulo (22-4) in which he scored a TKO victory in the 10th round and left no doubt that he is still one of the best pound for pound fighters in the world.
As for Lara, he is coming into the bout with alot of momentum due to the fact that he scored a unanimous decision victory over Austin Trout (26-2). The victory over Trout displayed that Lara is currently at the top of his game and should not be underestimated.
Consequently, it is no surprise that the odds makers have Lara as a slight underdog instead of a long shot due to his recent performances. However, one must also point to the fact that Lara was knocked down by Angulo in comparison to Canelo who clearly outmatch the same opponent.
Strategically, Canelo will surely look to apply alot of pressure to Lara in order to test his chin and potentially wear him down. Thus, it will take a superb performance by Lara in which he will look to outbox Canelo to pull off the upset. Lara's extensive Cuban amateur background and first-rate boxing skills should play a significant role in this fight if the boxing world is going to witness an upset.
From a promotional standpoint, Canelo is handled by Golden Boy Promotions and there will be much speculation as to whether Golden Boy's leader, Oscar De La Hoya, has the ability to effectively manage the business due to the resignation of the company's long time CEO, Richard Schaefer. It is no secret that Canelo is one of Golden Boy's biggest cash cows and anything other than a victory would lead to ridicule from the boxing public that De La Hoya may not be up to the task of continuing the success of Golden Boy.
In the end, Canelo vs. Lara is an intriguing match up that could bring alot of drama. Many will expect to view another Canelo victory, but if Lara can effectively use his boxing skills then he may be able to capture the victory. Only time will tell, but the fight should be a treat for the boxing public.
