Candlestick Park concert was the end of an era for the Beatles

It was a cold night on Aug. 29, 1966, when the Beatles ended their U.S. tour at Candlestick Park that year.

It was the final chapter of touring for the Beatles. Candlestick Park was the end of the line. The Beatles were ready for it to end, given incidents such as the Philippines, where they had to literally escape the country.

Anyone who has ever attended the park for a sports event knows the place can be unseasonably cold, even in the middle of summer. It was no exception that night as Paul McCartney made a point to mention the cold weather. (And he didn't get a break with the weather when he performed at AT&T Park in the city this year.)

The Beatles performed a set of 11 songs: "Rock 'n' Roll Music," "She's a Woman," "If I Needed Someone," "Day Tripper," Baby's in Black," I Feel Fine," "Yesterday," "I Wanna Be Your Man," "Nowhere Man," "Paperback Writer" and "Long Tall Sally."

Below are several videos, the first with silent footage from the show, the others with the audio.

There was never a time more special than those summer tours... I was 14-15-16 in '64, '65 and '66, and we clung to our transistor radios, waiting for the updates from our local DJs who were on tour with the boys and would send live reports and interviews back to the stations. Then the teen mags would come out with fab photos, and day by day reports on the press conferences, the concerts, everything the guys were doing. It was truly a magical time! After it was over, I would sit on our porch steps in August, and just long for them to be back. Thanks for the memories, Steve!

I was lucky enough to be in different cities during those years, so I got to hear it or more than one station. Those were special days, for sure.

They appear to have dropped off, thanks to a system problem. I've messaged support.

The Beatles final concert @Candlestick 66 had to be so exciting, imagine if it was announced that it was going to be their last live show. Like the story mentioned above by Kris T the teenage girls at the time created such a fun atmosphere during Beatlemania that everything the Beatles were doing became larger than life. It was my babysitter Darlene in those days that got me hooked on the Beatles w/ "Meet The Beatles" album, and "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" 45 single which I played infinitely on my record player. The conversation girls had at that time w/their friends like- if Paul would marry them and does George have a girlfriend ect. made it all the more fun at least for me...
