Candidate profile – David Gwyther Portland City Commissioner Position 1

David Gwyther is the third candidate we have looked at for the first position on the Portland City Council, a seat currently held by Amanda Fritz. There are a total of five candidates on the ballot this May for this seat. David is a native Oregonian, and a graduate of Creswell High School and the University of Oregon with a degree in economics. He is one of a small handful of candidates whose names are on the ballot by petition and not by filing fee. David works as a start-up business consultant and start-up public trading company consultant. He is a lobbyist for Radio Cab and Peterson Convenience Stores, and has been a long-time precinct committee person for the Multnomah County Democrats. From 1985 – 1992 he served on the licensing bureau advisory committee.

He is frustrated by seeing city maintenance not completed and city streets in East Portland not being paved, all while projects for special interest groups are being undertaken. David sees inefficiencies in budgeting that could find funding for paving projects, and inefficiencies in processing parking tickets through Multnomah County instead of city municipal court. He also says citizens have no way to report broken parking meters due to a lack of contact information on them.

David believes the City Council should ultimately, “Protect the Citizens, Pave the Streets, Pay the Bills.”
