Candidate Pacquiao's future in politics hinges on competent aides

. . . continued from part 1

In business - and boxing is a business - you don't measure words. You measure behavior. And those behaviors translate into results. Manny Pacquiao's generosity, humility, peacemaking tendencies, and calm demeanor are enabling more brazen, assertive, and positioning personalities to cloud, and evidently, alter the decision-making process during fight preparations. To provide inappropriate preparatory regimen is a clarion call for Pacquiao. Not Team Pacquiao. But for Manny Pacquiao alone. He is the principal.

On the necessity of political, not just boxing, skills

Red flags and alarm calls do not appear in the end, when dripping egg goo shows up in your face under the microscope of a hyper-media limelight. They show up on the front-end and during the middle of the process. It appears Pacman will have to learn skills outside of the boxing ring, and acquire these newfound traits in business and in politics. His nice man demeanor which procures the adulation of his countrymen and boxing fans all over the world, unfortunately makes him incapable of saying no, or to downright reject inappropriate practices or behaviors. Manny wants to please everybody.

He has spent an entire lifetime building a character that is robust, pure, well-intentioned, and inspiring. But he will have to learn (eventually).

Learning leadership and people management from GE

General Electric (GE) is one of the world's most storied and admired companies, and is one of the most respected organizations in the history of business.  Their leadership code calls for an executive, manager, or employee to be ousted if they do not align with the values of the organization.  Even if they produce good business results, GE kicks them out if their values do not conform with the rest of the team.  And for the top 500 executives of the company, they are subject to a "one strike and you're out policy."  No ifs, ands, or buts - no ombudsman.  No excuses.  No "forgiveness."  When it comes to ethics, they have one strike - make one mistake, and you're gone.  If you are not one of the top 500 executives, then you are given one chance.  Because if you fail a second time at the same mistake, then you were arrogant enough not to learn from your original mistake - and you're out of a job.  When everyone is applying to join a prestigious company, they don't need people who refuse to learn, or who refuse to adopt the values that make the organization succeed.  Finally, the bottom 10% of the group is automatically kicked out at the end of each year under a forced curve.  Because the weakest link brings down the whole group.

When the stakes are higher

There now appears a need to adjust - to "hold his foot down" as warranted when actions and behaviors do not conform to, or align with, the mission.  Manny Pacquiao is entering a different game in elected office.  He is a hero because of his supremely generous qualities; his boyish tendencies; and willingness to have fun and joke around.  But deception, sharp fangs, Machiavellian maneuvers, manipulation, and betrayals are values that are fair game in this world.  The royal courtesan does not don or possess angel wings.

It becomes increasingly imperative to properly bring in the right, credible, and professionalized aides in this realm.  In office, people's lives are at stake.  The nation's future is at stake.  It no longer is a simple one-on-one fight to pummel your opponent in the ring.  Resource allocation issues and the complexities of cause and effect in the area of policy-making can have lasting effects for generations to come.

When you say yes to everything, you stand up for nothing.  When you cannot say no, then you have no principles.  In politics, incompetent, dysfunctional, or Machiavellian aides pose as threats to yourself, and your cause.  Such threats - either from saboteurs, incapable associates, or mistake-prone colleagues or workers - especially in the Philippines, will only multiply as positions become elevated from local office to the national scene.

Thy company you keep discloses your fate

The time will come when aides will be tempted to bribe officials; when public relations disasters ensue; when a Solar Sports debacle repeats itself; when sensitive matters are intentionally divulged to the public. And at that point, fast jabs, right hooks, and straight lefts - or an incapacity to say no - won't be the solution.  And when they regularly bring about inappropriate actions and behaviors at the crucible of media scrutiny, unfortunately, their bad light will negatively rub off on the principal.  People equate your reputation commensurate with the reputations of the company you keep.  When Manny Pacquiao leaves the ring for good, he will be surrounded by many types of people with varying levels of character disposition - no longer just a boxer opponent and a referee.  He will have left behind days in which he interacted frequently with people who kept the highest of standards for themselves.  As basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar lamented, when he left basketball, he found himself surrounded by people who set low standards for themselves.  Gone were his teammates and the safe haven of organized discipline and the pursuit of (athletic) perfection.

As Manny realizes the loneliness of leadership - that others do not share his high standards or unblemished character, or love for country - then the ghost of Aeschylus from the 5th century Greek isles, can whisper:

"Even in our sleep,
Pain which we cannot forget
Falls drop by drop upon our heart,
Until in our own despair,
Against our will,
Comes wisdom
Through the awful grace of God."

"...incapable of saying no, or to downright reject inappropriate practices or behaviors. Manny wants to please everybody."

Exactly why Manny is "fit" for electoral/popularity contest and the politics of mendicancy-for-votes, but not deserving of LEADERSHIP. Voters saw this in 2007 and dumped him outright. Give him even a local post/leadership and his naivete will bury a people who's already down. What thinking fans see in Manny is a saviour-wannabe who brings false hopes born out of self-delusion.

But naive fans see otherwise. Well, delusion is indeed contagious!

I think manny should listen to coach freddie, for all that he have done to mannys career the guy knows what to do to defeat cotto.if manny listen to konz advise then its time to say goodbye for his fame & fortune. So pls guys if you care for our filipino hero then do the right thing.

Kronz should be fired. He’s a leech in team Pacquiao.

Away with Koncz, he is atermite slowly eating away Pacquiao.

Koncz = Conman. Manny use common sense. Analyze if you can and clean out your house. You can not please everybody. Keep the good tomatoes and throw out the rotten ones. Koncz seems to be a source of major distraction trying to make an impression for himself. He is getting into roles that he is not capable of. Be careful of people around you. You are like sugar right now. Too many unwanted ants are surrounding you and take whatever they can take from you. Good luck Manny you are a good guy, but you and your wife must seat down and discuss what needs to do to clean your house and team Pacquaio. Do away with Koncz he is useless and more of a trouble maker that will divide and bring down your credibility as a poor decision maker and your political opponents will use that against you. Good Luck Manny.

I don't understand why manny cannot decide to pick konz out from the team at this time of training. There are certain time that manny can use konz in another way. I remember roach told the media that "konz doesn't know boxing" so, manny! keep moving up not only in training but keep your eye looking around and decide what is the best of the team. It is appraciated if you do this and get my vote for your plan next year.

Manny is feeding his ego "bossing" it over white-man Koncz. He has no idea he is the one being played. What do you expect from someone with a 6th grade education. Later on it will come out how much this guy has stolen from Manny.

Mr. Dumon, very insightful article, but the title should be:

"Candidate Pacquiao's future in politics hinges on competent PUPPET MASTER."

Pacman is just a puppet, ergo flip-flop decisions.

Notice how he always looks back while going anywhere i.e. Presscon, interviews, walking to the gym....etc. It's the Puppet Master pulling him back, mentally.

Unsolicited advice for Pacman. Be very careful in trusting people around you. It's your weakness. You're too trusting. Koncks cannot be trusted. People from politics cannot be trusted. Trust yourself and your gutfeel. don't run for congress because it's legislative function. You will make laws in which you are not capable. Run for mayor or governor because it's an executive position. There, you can really help your people.

Whatever happens to Pacquiao, it's his call. Why u all concern now? when he was just struggling boxer nobody was looking. As long as he decides on every thing he does i think we should respect the guy. All of us for what we have learned about leadership, etc... are all bullshit unless God comes to our side. And I think Manny is being closely watched by his true partner and trainer. I hope u all know Who I am referring to.

  • Gintong Lahi 2 years ago

I have been following the career of Manny Pacquiao, in fact, I have written article about his many bouts and journey to greatness. Now, I'm being less confident of people around him. Politicians who are greedy and actions very unfavorable and manager who is "sip-sip buto" only and whose many actions tend to separate Pacquiao from the real person, a 5-star trainer, who only thinks and do what is good for Manny. Say, Manny, you need to use your head dealing with that politician and manager. Para di ka "ma-savit" at mawala ang Koncsi-misyon" mo.

If Pacman keeps a LEECH like Konzc in his team, he can not be a leader for the people as he will bring in more people like KONZC.

There is a saying, Birds of the same feathers flock together.

So, if PACMAN sticks with the LEECH, PACMAN will be another Popular LEECH in our government which we have a SURPLUS.

Roach should be his trustworthy adviser who looks after his business and boxing interest.

PACMAN WAKE UP!!!!! Use your COMMON SENSE. You are a smart guy in boxing. Dont let this LEECHES SWEET WORDS BLIND you from the truth. KONCZ is obviously after his own interest.

if roach find it difficult to deal with pac camp because of conzs, he would say to manny,"him or me boss"?if manny got problem with roach,he would say"thanks coach roach but we are finished". so calm down guys, manny and roach will have a happy ending.

Nov.14 is fast approaching the training camp of Manny Pacquiao seems bothered of many distractions..how can he concentrate in his traing if the team Pacquiao has its own internal problem..to the trainer, coach and whoever member of team Pacquiao,i'm appealing to everyone that pls. give manny pacquiao a good and high quality of training before facing to Miguel Cotto for him to win the fight..set aside first the quarrel between coach Freddie Roach and adviser Mike Koncz because this will not help to pacman's training camp..Miguel Cotto almost done his training camp he is now in Florida and continue doing his job in preparation for the november 14 showdown between him and Manny Pacquiao.

Manny wants to run for congressman not to legislate bt to have access to millions of pork barrel funds that he can give to those who ask from him, instead of getting from hi own pocket. He said it before, when he is no longer earning as a boxer he is worried about how he can continue giving to people. At least in this way the money he gives to the people also came from the people, and he will look good doing, like all other politicians in my country Philippines

Feeling left out of Pacman's circle...???

Somehow you did a complete turn around about Pacman, what happen, you used to worship Pacman. I guess something went sour along the way.

I remember you making references of Pacman to a legends of our time who have faced agony and defeat, likening him to some kind of a warrior conqueror who rose from the ashes of defeat and lead his people. Like a man who holds the fate of the nation, Pacman the savior of our nation.

It scares me every time somebody speaks of Pacman running for president, it reminds me of Erap, a movie star, who held the presidency like he was the head of a mob. With the possible shortcomings of Pacman as a leader or a politician, one good thing is he hasn't been corrupted yet as a person, he seemed to have a genuine intention of helping the poor. With all that's been said, only time will tell.

"It's not who i am underneath, but what i do that defines me"
