WHO cancer cases: 'Human disaster' predicted by WHO

Cancer rates are expected to rise to 57% according to the World Health Organization. On Feb. 5, NewsOXY reported that a sort of "human disaster" is bring predicted by WHO and a call to find ways to curb the disease is essential now more than ever before.

"The cancer burden is growing at an alarming pace and emphasizes the need for urgent implementation of efficient prevention strategies to curb the disease," WHO wrote on their website. The report conducted showed that there are 14 million new cases of cancer per year and that number will nearly double over the next 20 years.

While cancer rates are set to rise regardless of what is done, there are some things that can help protect people against cancer and if some cancer patients get a diagnosis at an early enough stage, their lives could be saved. This, of course, is difficult to do in developing countries which are expected to be hit the hardest by the cancer epidemic.

However, Dr. Bernard Stewart suggests targeted vaccination campaigns to help people avoid infection related cancers. He also suggests raising awareness about obesity and encouraging people to limit their alcohol and tobacco use according to the report.

Although cancer rates will still rise, knowing how to put up a good defense can only help with future diagnosis and treatment.
