I know you are saying "Oh one more thing that may be linked to cancer." You are tired of hearing about every thing under the sun that causes cancer. Here it is - a larger amount of plaque in the mouth has been found to be linked with a great chance of death by the dreaded C word.
In Stockholm they monitored 1,390 randomly selected adults between the ages of 30 to 40 years of age between 1984 - 2009. (You can read the whole study by clicking on this link if you want.) They monitored many facets of the study groups lifestyle including smoking, education level, dental visits and plaque. They found that the higher levels of plaque were linked with death by cancer.
You are saying - "What can we do to stave off this latest Cancer causer?" How do you think a dental professional would answer? Brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss your teeth every day. See a dentist and get your teeth cleaned. Eat less sugar. Brush with something with baking soda in it to help neutralize the acid level in your mouth. Eat more raw vegetables to exercise your gums. You can be one of the proud and elite and enjoy less of a risk of cancer just by taking care of your oral hygiene.
Maybe it doesn't matter so much though in a world that seems to come up with new links to cancer every day but this one seems pretty easy to deal with - at least for me.
