Canceled 'BioShock' PS Vita title was going to be like 'Final Fantasy Tactics'

BioShock” was one of the promising announcements for Sony’s PS Vita at E2 2011 that never came to fruition. With the closure of Irrational Games, “BioShock” creator Ken Levine opened up Monday on the surprising genre turn that he planned to take the handheld version of his signature franchise.

“[O]n the Vita game: [2K Games] and [Sony] couldn't put a deal together when I last checked. They seemed way more optimistic about this back in 2011,” Levine wrote on Twitter.

When asked what kind of PS Vita game that he was shooting for, Levine said, “[S]omething that would work well on the vita and not be a compromise in any way. [A]lso, as some know, [I]i'm a turn based wh**e.”

“I was thinking a Final Fantasy Tactics style thing set in pre-fall Rapture,” Levine concluded. This led to the equivalent of jaws dropping by some of his Twitter followers as most expected a “BioShock” game on the PS Vita to be a first-person shooter experience like the three Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and PC versions.

Alas, the PS Vita version will never happen. As Levine mentioned, 2K Games and Sony could never come to an agreement. This was followed by the shocking news that 2K Games and Levine agreed to shut close Irrational Games after the expensive and delay filled five-year development cycle of “BioShock Infinite.”

Levine is now working with a smaller team on digital only titles. Nothing has been announced yet, however.

“BioShock” is not dead yet, though. 2K Games confirmed that additional titles will be coming from the franchise but they will now be handled by 2K Marin. This is the studio that helped with the original “BioShock” and helmed “BioShock 2.”
