Houston is a city rich in culture, art and you don’t have to pay much to be enlightened such city treasures. The Canal Street Gallery is quickly becoming the go to place for Houston art enthusiasts. Just a few blocks from the new Dynamo Stadium, it will soon be in a hopping place. Tomorrow the gallery begins a month long exhibit, “Dreaming in Color” by Houston artist Maria Hughes and it's free and open to the public.
This exhibit is truly a natural and joyful feast. Hughes was born in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico and grew up inspired by the natural technical landscapes and sunsets of Mexico along the Rio Grande River. Hughes studied art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and received a Bachelor of Arts in Art Education from the University of Houston. She shared her passion for art as a teacher in the Houston. I.S.D. She also received masters from Texas A&M in Education Counseling and Guidance. She has spent her career helping Houston youth find their passions and inspiration.
Now, retired she is sharing her passions with the city through her master piece and specialized technique of working with monotypes, which are formed by painting water-based paints on a plexiglass plate. “I’d worked with several techniques over the years but when I tried monotypes I found the truth and brilliance in the color. I felt the joy.” Said Hughes. And it’s the joy that she hopes everyone will see and feel from her work. Like nature, every print is unique in the monotype process.
“It’s the best feeling to be able to share the beauty and nature of my Mexico birthplace with my home, Houston,” says Hughes. “Dreaming in Color” will be at the Canal Street Gallery tomorrow, March 31- April 28. The gallery is free and open to the public Fridays and Saturdays from 11am to 3pm.
Attend a special opening exhibit with Maria Hughes Friday April 8, 6pm-9pm.This special reception is also free and open to the public.
