Canadians have respectable performances in Olympic snowboarding

According to the Sochi 2014 website, three Canadians finished in the top eight in the women's parallel giant slalom snowboarding competition on Wednesday.

Marianne Leeson of Burlington, Ontario finished in fifth place, Caroline Calve of Hull, Quebec finished in sixth place and Ariane Lavigne of Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, Quebec placed eighth.

The showing was a solid one for team Canada when you consider the fact that no Canadian female snowboarder has ever medaled in the women's parallel giant slalom snowboarding competition in the history of the Olympic Winter Games.

Patrizia Kummer of Austria won the gold medal, Tomoka Takeuchi of Japan won the silver medal and Alena Zavarzina of Russia won the bronze medal.

In the men's parallel giant slalom snowboarding, Zavarzina's husband Vic Wild of Russia won the gold medal, followed by Nevin Galmarini of Switzerland who won the silver medal and Zan Kosir of Slovenia won the bronze medal.

Calve will have a second chance for a medal in the women's parallel slalom snowboarding competition on Saturday.
