Bouchard's recognition came one day after Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ontario won the Lionel Conacher Award as the Canadian Press male athlete of the year.
The recognition of Bouchard and Raonic are worthy. Bouchard moved from 144th to 32nd in the WTA Rankings, while Raonic won two tennis tournaments in 2013 (in San Jose and Bangkok), advanced to the final of the Rogers Cup in Montreal and helped lead Canada to the semi-finals of the Davis Cup.
However, Bouchard and Raonic are not the best athletes at their particular sport. The Canadian Press clearly overlooked bobsledder Kaillie Humphries of Calgary who dominated the 2012-13 World Cup circuit, has already won twice on the 2013-14 World Cup circuit, won a World Championship in St. Moritz, Switzerland, and is set to guide Canada at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.
On the men's side, mogulist Mikael Kingsbury should have received recognition. Kingsbury won the gold medal in men's moguls at the 2013 World Freestyle Skiing Championships in Voss, Norway and won five World Cups on the International Ski Federation circuit.
