According to the Canadian Press on Thursday, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper will not be attending the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

Harper has only attended one Olympic Games since becoming the Prime Minister of Canada in 2006 and that was at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver. Harper also attended the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver.

Earlier on Thursday the United States announced that President Barack Obama would not be attending the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, but that high profile sports athletes Brian Boitano (figure skating) and Billie Jean King (tennis) would be part of the American delegation. Both Boitano and King are gay, and it is clear the United States are not supportive of the Russian treatment of gays and lesbians. Boitano won the gold medal in men's figure skating at the 1988 Olympic Winter Games in Calgary.

The 2014 Olympic Winter Games will commence on February 6. The International Olympic Committee has asked all Olympians not to protest or conduct any political gestures while the Olympic Winter Games will take place.
