Canadian Olympic Committee receives significant funding

According to the Canadian Press, the Canadian federal government announced Thursday it is making significant funds available to eleven winter national sports organizations through Sport Canada's Sport Support Program.

The major reason for the $28 million in funding is to assist athletes who are preparing for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. The sports receiving funding are curling, biathlon, alpine skiing, bobsled, cross-country skiing, figure skating, freestyle skiing, hockey, ski jumping, snowboarding and speed skating.

It is interesting that funding is being made available to ski jumpers, who are not expected to contend for medals at next year's Olympic Winter Games.

The $28 million support from the federal conservative government now increases the federal funding to $40 million.

On Wednesday, the Canadian Olympic Committee signed an eight year contract with Canadian Tire for significant sponsorship agreements and flexible job opportunities to carded athletes.
