Canadian Music Week Film Fest 2012: Line-up announced

TORONTO ― Canadian Music Week (CMW) Film Fest is back on March 21 - 24, 2012. This year's installment features movie premieres, special screenings, and Q&A sessions with some of the films' stars and directors.

Check out the line-up below:

March 21 (TIFF Bell Lightbox, Reitman Square - 350 King Street West)

  • Canadian premiere: "Under African Skies" (Joe Berlinger, 2012, 102 minutes, U.S.A.) at 7 p.m. - In 1985, Paul Simon created political controversy when he went to South Africa to work on "Graceland," his highly acclaimed album, and broke a U.N. cultural boycott put in place to end apartheid. A quarter of a century later, he travels back there... 
  • Torontopremiere: "Andrew Bird: Fever Year" (Xan Aranda, 2011, 81 minutes, U.S.A.) at 9:45 p.m. - An intimate look at Andrew Bird's personality and creative process.

March 22 (TIFF Bell Lightbox, Reitman Square - 350 King Street West)

  • Canadian premiere: "Sound It Out" (Jeanie Finlay, 2011, 75 minutes, U.K.) at 7 p.m. - A portrait of the very last surviving vinyl record shop in Teesside, North East England.

  • Toronto premiere: "Last Days Here" (Don Argott/Demian Fenton, 2011, 90 minutes, U.S.A.) at 9:15 p.m. - For the last 36 years, Bobby Liebling has been the lead singer of the band Pentagram. But, various acts of self-destruction, multiple band break-ups, and botched record deals have condemned his music to obscurity. Frozen for decades in his parents' basement, Bobby is finally discovered by the heavy metal underground...

March 23 (NFB Cinema - 150 John Street)

  • Canadian premiere: "Kevin" (Jay Duplass, 2011 40 minutes, U.S.A.) at 7 p.m. - An exploration of musician Kevin Gant, who mysteriously vanished from the Austin, Texas, scene in 1995. The film will be preceded by "Last Music Man" (David Kalinauskas, 2011, 9 minutes, Canada) and "Man & Machine: A Naked Robotic Love Story" (Jesse Roesler / Jonathan Nowak, 2011, 21 minutes, U.S.A.).
  • Canadian premiere: "Hit So Hard" (P. David Ebersole,  2011, 103 minutes, U.S.A.) at 9 p.m. - A portrait of Patty Schemel, the hard-hitting drummer of Courtney Love's seminal rock band, Hole, during its peak years.

March 24 (NFB Cinema - 150 John Street)

  • "The Muppet Movie" (James Frawley, 1979, 95 minutes, U.S.A.) at 4 p.m. - A special retrospective screening featuring a post-film Q&A session with composer Paul Williams.
  • Work-in-progress screening: "Parallax Sounds" (Augusto Contento, 2012, 90 minutes, Finland/France/Germany/U.S.A.) at 7 p.m. - An exploration of the intimate connection between music and urban landscape in Chicago. Features interviews with prominent musicians of the city's underground music scene: Steve Albini, Ian Williams, David Grubbs, Damon Locks, Ken Vandermark, and Azita Youssefi.
  • Canadian premiere: "Girl Walk // All Day" (Jacob Krupnick, 2012, 77 minutes, U.S.A.) at 9:15 p.m. - Three dancers turn New York City's sidewalks, parks, and stadiums into an evolving stage in this feature-length dance music video and tale of urban exploration.

March 24 (The Toronto Underground Cinema - 186 Spadina Avenue)

  • Canadian premiere: "No Room for Rock Stars: The Vans Warped Tour" (Parris Patton, 2012, 100 minutes, U.S.A.) at 7 p.m. - The true stories of modern era rock and roll from every possible angle. Features a post-film Q&A session with Vans Warped Tour founder, Kevin Lyman.

CMW Film Fest is part of Slacker Canadian Music Week, a five-day annual entertainment event taking place in 60 venues in downtown Toronto. Other highlights include four information-intensive conferences, a tradeshow, Canadian Comedy International Fest, four awards shows, and Canadian Music Fest.
