Canada wins three medals on day 1 of Paralympic Winter Games

According to the Sochi 2014 website, team Canada won three medals on the first day of the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi.

Mark Arendz of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island won a silver medal in the men's 7.5 km biathlon standing competition. With only one arm, Arendz posted a result of 19:14.4, which was 0.7 seconds back of Russian gold medalist Vladislav Lekomtcev. Azat Karachurin won the bronze medal with a result of 19:14.9. Arendz moved from sixth to second in the race after missing an early shot.

Team Canada meanwhile won their other two medals in alpine skiing.

Josh Dueck of Kimberley, British Columbia won the silver medal in the men's sitting downhill competition. Dueck, who broke his back in 2004 during a freestyle skiing accident and was left to a wheelchair, posted a time of 1:24.19. Japan's Akira Kano won gold with a time of 1:23.8, and Takeshi Suzuki won the bronze medal with a time of 1:24.75.

Meanwhile in the men's alpine skiing downhill visually impaired competition, Mac Marcoux of Sault-Ste. Marie, Ontario won the bronze medal. Marcoux's time was 1:23.02. Yon Santacana Maiztegui of Spain won the gold medal with a time of 1:21.76, followed by Miroslav Haraus of Slovakia at 1:22.01.

Team Canada meanwhile went to 2-0 in wheelchair curling after a 6-3 win over Great Britain and a 5-4 win over Russia. Canada broke a 3-3 tie with three consecutive stolen points in the sixth, seventh and eighth ends in their win over Great Britain, and then beat Russia in the final end on an excellent out turn draw to the four foot by Ina Forrest of Fort St. John, British Columbia.

Finally in men's sledge hockey, Canada hammered Sweden 10-1. Adam Dixon of Midland, Ontario and Anthony Gale of Brampton, Ontario each notched two goals and two assists.

Canada is in fourth place in the overall medal standings behind Russia, Ukraine and Japan.
